FKEY Extender is a Startup Document (INIT) that lets you invoke FKEYs with the function keys on an extended keyboard. When FunKeys is running, FKEY 10 maps onto F5, FKEY 11 to F6 and so forth. FKEYs 21-31 map onto Shift or Command F5-F15. In addition to doubling the number of possible function keys, this allows you to "guard" dangerous functions so that just hitting one of the function keys alone won't invoke it. If an FKEY doesn't exist for a specific function key, that keypress is passed on to GetNextEvent; otherwise, FunKeys eats the keypress. F1-F4 are not used, since most applications map those keys onto Undo, Cut, Copy and Paste, respectively.
How to Use It:
Drag the FKEY Extender icon to the system folder. If you are running System 7, answer "yes" when asked if you want the file placed in the Extensions Folder. FKEY Extender will take effect the next time you start up your machine. To keep FKEY Extender from running, hold down the mouse button while your system starts up until the FKEY Extender Icon shows up with an "X" through it.
Problems:
None known, but this is a beta version. If you find any, I can be reached over the net at "jbrewer@wri.com", or on America Online at "JBrewer".
